Spook Tarts

4 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 3/4 cup shortening
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 large egg
1/2 cup water
Large Halloween cookie cutters
Jelly or jam of your choice
4 cups powdered sugar
food coloring
Candy eyes, candy for decorations, small decorating beads, plastic rings. etc.
Decorating tips or squeeze bottle

Whisk together flour, sugar and salt until well blended.

With a pastry cutter, cut shortening into the flour mixture.

In a small bowl whisk together vinegar, large egg and water.

Stir the egg mixture into the flour mixture until well blended. The dough should be soft and easy to handle.

Spread some flour onto a rolling cloth, divide your dough into five or six balls (this isn't necessary, but it is easier to get the dough thinner when you are working with smaller amounts.

Roll the dough as thin as you can 1/16". The dough is really easy to work with so this should not be a problem. Cut your shapes out with a cookie cutter. It is important that your cookie cutter is large, otherwise you won't be able to put much jelly inside the tart and it will cook out during baking.

With a thin spatula lift the shapes off of the rolling mat and place on top of a parchment lined cookie sheet.

Place a tablespoon of jelly/jam on top of the shape and spread jam on top of the shape leaving a 1/8" border along the edges. Do not spread the jelly to the edge of your shape.

Place another same size shape on top and pinch around all the edges to seal the jelly inside.

Bake the tarts at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until slightly brown. When the tarts come out of the oven place on a cooling rack.

Cool completely before frosting and decoration. This makes 16-18 tarts depending ho how thin you roll the dough.

Now the fun begins. We made mostly tombstone tarts because they were so easy and fun to decorate.

Mix the powdered sugar and just enough water to make a good spreading consistency.  Add the water slowly and stir each time. Divide the frosting into different bowls and add food coloring. Stir in the food coloring until well blended. Frost your tarts leaving a 1/8" border unfrosted along the edge. With a decorating tip or squeeze bottle add writing or images.

Halloween Party Mystery Dinner Idea

Halloween is a time to party, but it's also a time to play fun tricks! This last weekend we threw a backwards "mystery dinner" party, and it was a total blast! We came up with funny names for a bunch of different foods (appetizers/main course/dessert)/drinks/utensils.  Every guest at our Halloween Party Mystery Dinner Idea had to select four things they wanted for each course and then were completely surprised by what they got! (for example, somebody could have gotten a spoon, ice cream, an enchilada, and nacho dip for a course)  Everybody had a ton of fun and this will definitely become a new Halloween tradition! We've got the whole dinner here for you: invitations, menus, instructions, etc.  You'll have a blast!
